Synopsis
Dans une ancienne maison de Hanoi, Bi, un enfant de 6 ans vit avec ses parents, sa tante et leur cuisinière. Ses terrains de jeu préférés sont une fabrique de glace et les grandes herbes au bord de la rivière. Après des années d'absence, son grand-père, gravement malade, réapparaît et s'installe chez eux. Alors que Bi établit peu à peu une relation avec lui, le père de Bi cherche à éviter son propre père et fuit le foyer. Chaque soir, il s'enivre et va voir une masseuse pour laquelle il éprouve un très fort désir. La mère de Bi ferme les yeux. La tante, toujours célibataire, croise dans le bus un jeune homme de 16 ans. L'attraction qu'elle ressent pour lui la bouleverse.

It all started in 1993. We must imagine a young Vietnamese watching TV. We must remember Tran Anh Hung or The Scent of Green Papaya being awarded the Caméra d’Or. A summer night, almost 17 years ago, at home, feverishly watching Cannes Film Festival closing ceremony on TV. Watching a young Vietnamese being awarded the Caméra d’Or stirred an intense emotion in the young man I was. At that precise moment, I decided to work in the cinema field whereas I was about to become a writer. After a long development of his art, Phan Dang Di got into the Cinéfondation Workshop in 2008 with the project BI, DUNG SO! In spite of its inherent difficulties, this experience enabled him to make his first feature film, the achievement of a career which started with a dream 17 years ago.
Phan Dang Di has chosen a « sensualist » narration, brushing a script with few dialogues : shooting the film didn’t consist in telling a story with the usual narrative structure but in creating sensations linked to each scenes. The director makes up a sensual image, and the bodies get naked as the landscapes get on fire. He was looking for this sensuality in actors during the casting, and chose to shoot during the hot season, describing the natural eroticism of tropical climates. If men seem to be weak, BI, DUNG SO ! is a celebration, as erotic as political, of women : In the Vietnamese society which has been submitted to so many upheavals, if things get better, it’s thanks to the women’s perseverance.
