Synopsis
"This film explores what makes the unbelievable believable. When we hear a story that seems mysterious or far-fetched, we put more trust in its accuracy the longer ago it took place. As the centuries pass, the truth becomes more malleable. We grow less skeptical of what we might otherwise dismiss as incredible. Our perspective changes. This film addresses the eerie transformation of a familiar myth when displaced to the present."

Portrait by Bernard Payen

If melancholy could be portrayed in Cinema, it could be by Kirsten Dunst, who has first played in Oedipus Wrecks, a New York Stories segment directed by Woody Allen (she was 8 !) before playing some striking roles as Lux Lisbon, a mysterious teenage in Virgin Suicides (Sofia Coppola, 2000), Mary Jane Watson, Spider Man’s friend and object of desire (Sam Raimi, 2002, 2004, 2007), or Marie-Antoinette in the eponymous film (Sofia Coppola, 2006).
Bastard, presented at la Semaine, is her second short film after Welcome in 2007.

Entretien avec Kirsten Dunst :

1. What made you first want to make films (a film, an actor, a place, an anecdote…)?
Working as an actress for so long is the best film school. I was ready to create something that was my vision.

2. Choose three words which best describe your view on cinema. Why?
At it's best, a film to me is emotional, spontaneous, and compelling.

3. Where did you get the idea for this film? Was it difficult to shoot?
My friend Sasha and I wanted to make a short film, and I wanted to direct again. She spurred the idea and then we talked about the setting and how to tell this story in an unconventional way that would be provocative. The shooting process was two split days. Every film is a mini war, and you have to be a leader. Camaraderie on set is important. Everyone should be respected and treated well. I try and be conscious of everyone because I know that if the crew's with you they can make anything happen.

4. How did you feel when you found out your film had been selected by La Semaine de la Critique?
I was very excited. Cannes has such a prestigious history and to be there as a director is a great honor for me that's very humbling and inspiring.
