“Moderation”: this is the word chosen by Moon Byoung-gon to qualify his style… Nevertheless, on discovering his astonishing short film Finis Operis another word swiftly comes to mind: Korean! It’s amazing how this young director, movie lover since he was a kid and graduated from Seoul University, has been able to condense in nine minutes what we like best in the (so-called) peaceful morning country: wickedness and a facetious sense of humor. Inspired by a news item on an unusual hanging and driven by the tragicomic talent of and old comedian who reminded him of Don Quijote, he delivers a film that actually sums up “the irony and vitality of life” and in a very erectile way…
