LA LAMPE AU BEURRE DE YAK
Taking family photos in front of a « prestige » location (Forbidden City, Disneyland etc) is a very popular practice in China. From this universal premise (theatrically staging oneself : Instagram sepia filter aficionados and Facebook « likes » enthusiasts know this well), HU Wei has created a very original work, part-fiction, part-documentary, a succession of photo sessions with Tibetan families which, for the few seconds it takes to take the photo, express their habits, their lives, their dreams and aspirations colonised by the powerful.
