Gaëlle Denis' initial field of work was animation before a workshop with Abbas Kiarostami pushed her to try and shoot 'real' scenes. This particular double patronage perhaps explains the very unique tone of Crocodile: first, the background in animation, as the filmmaker explores the bereavement of a father through a world where the line between imagination and reality is blurred, before the former overtakes the latter completely. Second, Kiarostami's influence, as, similarly to her mentor, she never forgets the face of the actor, the weight of the character and that of the bereavement. These inspirations are balanced perfectly in this film where tragedy and lightness are harmoniously intertwined.
