Contemporary cinema has many idols, but few icons. Chloë Sevigny is among the few who, since Kids, knew how to jostle lines and boundaries in Hollywood: indie glamour, artistic freedom and puzzling good taste. Kitty, her first short film as a director, has all these qualities. Telling the story of a genuine metamorphosis, the film is as surprising as it is seducing. Borrowing fruity tale elements from Lewis Carroll, it also stays a personal film, evoking a mother and daughter relation with a prevailing and vivid feeling of abandon. Like all other paradises, childhood needs to be lost in order to exist.
