If Portugal didn't exist, it would have to be invented. Or reinvented by someone like Carlos Conceição, in his poetico-political satire, a dynamic mix of Marx, XIXth century Portugal and fairy tales. This queer and fetishistic Cinderella is taken from the oft-ignored point of view of the Prince Charming. But a Prince Charming whose charms are in borderline bad taste, tormenting the residents of our republics. A Sadien tale with ironic glamour, Boa Noite Cinderela, with its avowedly restricted resources, signals an illustrious start to a great filmmaker's career, deeply and sublimely affecting his audience.
