Only genre cinema can truly render and subvert real-life horror on screen. Gerardo Herrero calls upon the codes of slasher films to depict a Columbine-style killing spree. In 15 minutes, Safari manages to cram in sharp frames, narrative red herrings, graphic horror, claustrophobic suspense and a Wellesian art of the counterfeiter (the film is shot in Madrid but could just as easily have been shot in the USA). Instead of delivering a lecture on the ills of society, he exposes the spinelessness of those who won't look evil in the face and plays with the disquieting fascination of cinema. As if Wes Craven had shot Elephant.
